Delhi High Court was hearing two PIL filed by a journalist and a lawyer, The PILs wanted direction to the Union Government to identify and block public access to the applications, software, platforms and websites enabling the creation of deepfakes.
Deepfakes photos and videos involve the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replace the likeness of a person in an existing photo or video with someone else’s likeness.
Delhi High Court commented on the issue that “Centre should start thinking about this. deepfake is going to be a serious menace in the society,” this was said by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela while hearing these two petitions against non-regulation on deepfake technology in the country.
The Court also asked the petitioner to study the laws introduced by the European Union, United States as well as the Elvis Act of the State of Tennessee in the US, and file an affidavit.
Delhi High Court said to the Government counsel that you must understand the damage that will be done by this technology because you are the government. Court further said, deepfake technology is going to be a serious menace in the society. Government have to act on the issue.
